Ningxia university, formerly known as ningxia normal university and ningxia agricultural college, was founded in September 1958. In September 1962, ningxia normal university, ningxia agricultural college and ningxia medical college merged to form ningxia university. In January 1970, ningxia medical college and ningxia agricultural college were separated from ningxia university. In December 1997, ningxia university merged with ningxia institute of technology and yinchuan teachers college (ningxia institute of education) to form ningxia university. In February 2002, the former ningxia university and ningxia agricultural college merged to form ningxia university.

By March 2019, the school covers an area of 2,938 mu, a teaching experiment farm of 1890 mu, a school building of 870,000 square meters, and publishes 4 kinds of academic journals. The university has 22 secondary teaching units (colleges) and 77 undergraduate majors. There are 3 post-doctoral research stations, 6 first-level doctoral programs, 36 second-level doctoral programs, 31 first-level master programs, 175 second-level master programs, and 15 professional master programs. The university has 2,625 faculty members, 17,780 full-time undergraduate students, 3,626 graduate students, 1,143 minority preparatory students and 194 overseas students.
