Lanzhou university was founded in 1909, its predecessor was gansu law school established during the new policy of the late qing dynasty. In 1928, it was expanded into lanzhou sun yat-sen university. In 1945, it was named national lanzhou university. In 1952, it was designated as one of the 14 comprehensive universities in China. In 2001, the ministry of education and the government of gansu province signed the provincial key co-construction agreement; In 2002 and 2004, the former grassland ecology institute of gansu province and lanzhou medical college were merged into lanzhou university
